The television western series Rawhide was unique among westerns of the '50s and '60s. It is based on the dairy of a real life trail boss named George C. Duffield. It was written in 1866.

The dairy depicted the hardships and sometimes tragedies of a cattle drive from San Antonio to Sedalia in 1866.

Rawhide was aired on CBS beginning on January 9, 1959 and lasting until December 7, 1965. It had 217 one- hour episodes all in black and white.

Extremely popular, Rawhide was the 5th longest-running western series on television. Ahead of it were Wagon

Train which ran for 8 years, The Virginian for 9 years, Bonanza for 14 years, and Gunsmoke for 20 years.

Clint EastwoodRawhide starred Eric Fleming (1925 - 1966) who played trail boss Gil Flavor and a virtual unknown by the name of Clint Eastwood (b. 1930) as Rowdy Yates.

The opening theme song and music to Rawhide is one of the most memorable of any TV series. The lyrics were written by Ned Washington in 1958 and the music was composed by academy-award winning (High Noon) composer Dimitri Tiomkin; it was sung by Frankie Laine.

As a testament to the song's popularity, it was featured in the motion pictures Blues Brothers and Shrek II.

The popular lyrics are printed below:

Keep movin’, movin’, movin’, Though they’re disapprovin’,
Keep them dogies movin’, Rawhide. Don’t try to understand ‘em,
Just rope ‘em, throw, and brand ‘em. Soon we’ll be livin’ high and wide.
My heart’s calculatin’, My true love will be waitin’, Be waitin’
at the end of my ride.
Move ‘em on, head ‘em up, Head ‘em up, move ‘em on,
Move ‘em on, head ‘em up, Rawhide!
Head ‘em out, ride ‘em in, Ride ‘em in, let ‘em out,
Cut ‘em out, ride ‘em in, Rawhide!
Keep rollin’, rollin’, rollin’, Though the streams are swollen,
keep them dogies rollin’, Rawhide. Through rain and wind and weather,
Hell bent for leather, Wishin’ my gal was by my side.
All the things I’m missin’, Good vittles, love and kissin’,
Are waiting at the end of my ride.
Move ‘em on, head ‘em up,Head ‘em up, move ‘em on,
Move ‘em on, head ‘em up, Rawhide!
Head ‘em out, ride ‘em in, Ride ‘em in, let ‘em out,
Cut ‘em out, ride ‘em in, Rawhide!
Rawhide! Head ‘em out, ride ‘em in, Ride ‘em in, let ‘em out,
Cut ‘em out, ride ‘em in, Rawhide!
RAWHIDE!
